Bees are arguably the most important pollinators on the planet. Their tireless work is essential for the reproduction of many flowering plants, including a significant portion of the crops we rely on for food. Without bees, our diets would be severely limited, and the natural world would look dramatically different.
It is estimated that one out of every three bites of food we eat exists because of animal pollinators, and bees are responsible for the vast majority of this work. They pollinate crops such as almonds, apples, avocados, blueberries, and coffee. The economic value of their services is in the billions of dollars annually.
Unfortunately, bee populations worldwide are facing significant threats. These include habitat loss, the use of pesticides, climate change, and various parasites and diseases. Protecting bees requires a concerted effort from farmers, governments, and individuals.
